Certificate Error when accessing cPanel

Recently we have seen more issues with certificate warnings when our clients try to access their cPanel. The security error that comes up is due to accessing a domain in which the name of the site does not exactly match the domain of our security certificate. For example, "" would be listed on the certificate as your server. However, when you log into the cPanel, your connection usually will go to "". This is why you get a mismatch error.


This is very easy to work around and the connection is still secure. The warning is just letting you know of the difference in the name.

Here are instructions for getting around the error in different browers:

Internet Explorer 6

In Internet Explorer 6, you will get a message pop up as a security alert asking you if you wish to trust the certifying authority. Under "Do You want to proceed?" click "Yes.”

Internet Explorer 7

You may stop the error message by permanently accepting the server certificate. In Internet Explorer, choose to continue to web site. Once logged in, right click on the page and choose Properties from the bottom of the menu. Click on the Certificates button, click Install certificate button and follow the rest of the wizard.

Internet Explorer 8


Open Internet Explorer and verify that the page you are trying to view is listing a certificate error. To clear the certificate error go to Tools --> Internet Options from the menu of IE 8. Click on the Advanced tab and scroll down to the security section. Clear the boxes for: "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" and "Check for server certificate revocation". Click Apply and Ok. Then attempt to reload the page by clicking the Refresh button at the end of the address bar or by pressing the F5 key. Your page should now load as expected.

Firefox 2


Next time you receive the message, select the "Accept the certificate permanently" and you should not be alerted to this issue again.

Firefox 3

In Firefox 3, you may be warned with a security message box when trying to login to your cPanel account. In the message it will say something to the effect of:


XXXXXXXXXXXXX:2083 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.
(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

To get rid of this error message, on the bottom of the screen you should see a button that says, "Add Exception...". Click that and another box should pop up. On that box, you should see the words "Add Security Exception."

Click on the "Get Certificate" button and then make sure the check mark box for "Permanently store this exception" is checked. On the bottom of the popup window click on Confirm Security Exception, it will ask you to confirm. A new box pops up telling you the information must be resent to login - click the "Resend" button and you should be able to login.
